The pins face down, so the plain silver side should be facing up. There’s only one possible way to correctly orient the CPU, which makes it easy to install. You want to avoid static electricity, so build your PC on a table or some flat surface away from carpet. Dispel any built-up bodily charge by touching a grounded metal object before you touch sensitive PC components.

If you don’t, more than likely you will need to go out and repurchase a better processor later. Also you will want to make sure you get memory that works with your system. When selecting a case, be aware of the form factor.

What Do You Want To Build?

Here’s a diagram of what most PC interiors look like, so you know where to put everything. Stands for Power Supply Unit, converts the AC current in the power socket to DC current in the components, allowing them to function in a safe manner. If you have a high end computer, you should get at least 450W PSU. Most cases are ATX, but make sure it is the same type as your motherboard (ATX, MicroATX, BTX, etc…). There are two main CPU manufactruers, Intel and AMD.

  • All our computers are backed by exceptional customer support.
  • A motherboard is the first component you’ll want to choose.
  • If you are building this computer for home use you might as well reward yourself with some perks.
  • Your data is accessed faster and preserved longer on SSDs because of this difference.
  • PC building is no more difficult than completing a Lego set or building a piece of furniture given you have compatible components.
  • You probably don’t want to pay for a tempered glass side panel if the computer will be hidden under your desk, for example.

Push the SSD down and replace the tiny screw to lock it in place. Take the motherboard out of its antistatic packaging and put it on your work surface. Find the CPU socket, which will be covered with a protective plastic cap. In one corner of the plastic cap, or more commonly, on the socket itself, you’ll see a small arrow — take note of where this arrow is. Ideally, you want the perfect amount of RAM for you/your build. Generally speaking, however, the average gaming rig needs 8-16GB of RAM.

What Is Needed To Build A Computer

If you don’t want to download them, finding CDs of your favorite classic games are the way to go. I’ve obtained Star Wars Episode 1 Racer in box form, just so I can install it as it was intended back in 1999. As explained in the motherboard section, look at the IDE drives. Windows 98 struggled with a drive that had DVD functionality for me, but with one that only had CD and rewritable on the drive, it was fine.

Graphics Card

You’ll need to do this from a different PC and download the appropriate file to a USB stick. Modern motherboards allow updating the BIOS from within the BIOS screen, which is much easier than the old boot disks of yesteryear. Once your BIOS is updated, at a minimum we recommend enabling the XMP memory setting and configuring your date/time and boot device. Then you just need to install an OS and you’re all set. Our case has a mounting bracket that we first screw into the power supply, and then the power supply slides into the back of the case.
