In Years 3 and 4 about a third of your time is spent working on your chosen individual project. Most tutorials, classes, and lectures are delivered by staff who are tutors in their subject. Many are world-leading experts with years of experience in teaching and research. Some teaching may also be delivered by postdoctoral researchers or postgraduate students who are studying at doctorate level. This module explores logic, data storage and algorithms with the use of practical demonstrations and activities. Operating in parallel with programming-focussed modules, we will develop a toolkit of key concepts from a theoretical (non-code) perspective, facilitating a better understanding of these fundamentals.
- The curriculum has been designed with the aim of supporting you in pursuing employment or further research opportunities in computing or IT related fields.
- A hands-on course from the outset, you’ll benefit from a number of practical workshops as well as preparing for your third year work placement.
- We may also accept your English language grade from the German Abitur if you achieved 10 in English (taken as an achievement/main/ intensive course. Please note this is only valid for 2 academic years after qualification.
- Games design and development is an increasingly important and sophisticated topic, that draws together many of the core aspects of Computer Science and Software Engineering.
- We look for proven mathematical talent, the ability to think and work independently, the capacity to absorb and use new ideas, and enthusiasm.
The course focuses on the underlying theories of computer science and their practical applications in the latest technological developments. At Newcastle, all Computer Science students study the same modules for the first two years, before specialising in the later years. This gives you time to explore the subject and decide which area you want to specialise in.

The University will consider students who have taken GCE A Level examinations, the International Baccalaureate , or a suitable foundation programme, such as the Foundation Pathways, for entrance to undergraduate programmes. Half (49%) of computer science graduates in employment in the UK 15 months after graduation are working as programmers and software development professionals, while 8% were employed as IT and telecommunications professionals. The top five jobs held by graduates are related to computer sciences and include cyber security professionals, IT business analysts, architects and systems designers. You’ll now be ready to demonstrate all that you’ve learned over the past three years by undertaking a substantial problem-solving individual project focused on a specific area of personal interest, or one that relates to your intended career. Students will explore computational problem solving with GP-GPUs and expand upon machine learning knowledge to analyse real datasets and control real-time systems.
To apply to York, you will need to complete an online application via UCAS . Our Real Time Systems Lab is the main research and development facility for the Real Time Systems research group. Inside the laboratory is a range of high-performance computers, custom hardware like FPGAs, robots, and various industrial machinery. Our Interaction Labs provide excellent facilities for research and teaching in human-computer interaction. The Interaction Labs consist of an Accessibility and Usability Lab and a Games Research Lab, both of which are stocked with the latest technologies.
If you are unable to secure a placement by the end of the second year of your studies you will transfer onto the equivalent degree programme. Enrolment on a programme with a semester/year abroad does not guarantee you a semester/year abroad placement. In the event you do not secure a semester/year abroad placement, you will be transferred to the standard variant of your degree scheme without a semester or year abroad. The majority of our courses have been formally recognised by professional bodies, which means the courses have been reviewed and tested to ensure they reach a set standard. In some instances, studying on an accredited course can give you additional benefits such as exemptions from professional exams .
Programmes typically range from 2 to 6 weeks, across destinations such as China, Zambia, South Korea, Japan, Canada and across Europe. Machine Learning is about extracting useful information from large and complex datasets. The module will cover the practical basis of how learning algorithms are can be applied. A pass in the science Practical is required where it is separately endorsed. Applicants who have not studied the required subjects at A-level can apply for the Engineering/Physics/Mathematics Foundation Year.
